Multi-State High-Speed Chase Ends With Arrest After Shoplifting Investigation

HARALSON COUNTY, Ga. – A shoplifting investigation escalated into a multi-county, multi-state pursuit that ended with the arrest of a suspect now facing numerous felony and misdemeanor charges, according to law enforcement officials.

The incident began after the Bremen Police Department issued a be-on-the-lookout alert for a shoplifting suspect. A short time later, Deputy Brayden Loyd encountered a vehicle matching the description after it cut him off at an intersection. Loyd initiated a traffic stop, and the driver initially pulled over before fleeing as the deputy exited his patrol vehicle.

Authorities said the suspect drove into a no-passing zone and into oncoming traffic as the pursuit continued. The chase traveled through Tallapoosa, where speeds reportedly reached 102 miles per hour near the Piggly Wiggly area, with the driver weaving through turning lanes to avoid traffic.

The pursuit crossed into Alabama, where deputies with the Cleburne County Sheriff’s Office deployed stop sticks, flattening one of the vehicle’s front tires. Despite the damage, the driver continued traveling at reduced speeds until law enforcement was able to box in the vehicle and bring the pursuit to an end.

Officials said the driver provided multiple names to deputies at the scene before being taken into custody. He was later identified as Marcus Tubbs and was arrested by Cleburne County authorities on their charges.

Tubbs is expected to be transported to the Haralson County Jail, where he will face a series of charges including felony fleeing and attempting to elude, obstruction, reckless driving, speeding, failure to maintain lane, driving with a revoked license, and providing false information to law enforcement. Additional charges are possible, and authorities noted the case involves at least three jurisdictions.

Law enforcement officials said the incident serves as a reminder that what begins as a minor offense can quickly escalate when suspects attempt to flee.
