Darlington moves to 5-1 with win over Bremen

On Friday, October 1st the Bremen Blue Devils took on the Darlington Tigers. Bremen is coming off a huge homecoming game win as they defeated Clarkston 49-8. The Tigers of Darlington are also coming off a win as they took down Kings Ridge 21-14.

Bremen received the opening kickoff and started 1st and 10 on their own 22. Darlington defense put Bremen in a tough 3rd down position when the Tigers safety Patrick Shelley tipped up a pass over the middle and picked it off, returning it for a pick 6. Darlington jumped ahead early 7-0.

Bremen would start their 2nd drive on offense at about the same spot they started their first. After a huge hook up between Christian Burks and Nick Richardson, Bremen’s Blake Matthews took it in from a yard out. The game was now even at 7.

After forcing a 3 and out Bremen started the drive with a penalty. On 1st and 15 Bremen tried a designed quarterback run that ended in a fumble and a recovery by the Tigers Patrick Shelley. A few moments later the Tigers would capitalize on the mistake and Caleb Thompson would take it in from 4 yards out. The Tigers now led 14-7 with a little over 5 minutes left in the first quarter of action. 

As the end of the 1st came to an end Darlington’s Patrick Shelley connected with Talan Shirey for a 33-yard touchdown pass. The Tigers would take a 21-7 lead to the start of the second quarter. 

Bremen’s offense would start the second with a 6-minute drive that ended in Blake Matthews 2nd rushing touchdown of the night, this one from 10 yards out.  Darlington would block the point after attempt to make the score 21-13.

With less than a minute left in the first half Patrick Shelley took off down the sideline and in a diving, attempt hit the pylon to score from 16-yards out. Bremen would return the favor and block the point after attempt making the score at half 27-13.

Coming out of the break Darlington started 1st and 10 at their own 38. With just a little over a minute off the clock D’Marion Floyd took it 42 yards to pay dirt. Darlington would now take a commanding 34-13 lead.

Bremen would answer with a score of their own coming off a 13-yard passing touchdown from Christian Burks to Nick Richardson. The devils would make it 34-20 with 7:41 left in the 3rd.

Bremen would force a 3 and out and with his 3rd rushing touchdown of the game Blake Matthews would put Bremen a score away with 5:39 left in the 3rd still trailing 34-27. 

Darlington would look to go up by 2 scores with a field goal, but the attempt came up a little short. Bremen would put together a nice drive that ended in a fumble and a scope and score by Patrick Shelley. With under 2 minutes left Darlington had a 40-27 lead on the Blue Devils.

As the finale seconds ticked off the clock Christian Burks found Nick Richardson for his second receiving touchdown of the game. Darlington would win 40-33.

Darlington improved to (5-1) on the year and will open region play next week at Mount Paran Christian (3-3). Darlington’s Patrick Shelley ended the game 7-13 passing for 87-yards and 1 touchdown also 16 rushing attempts for 97-yards and a touchdown. Defensively Shelley had a pick 6, a fumble recovery for a touchdown and 2 tackles. 

Bremen falls to (4-2) and will have a off week to prepare for their region opener against Callaway (4-1) on the 15th. Bremen’s Blake Matthews ended the night with 19 rushing attempts for 103-yards and 3 touchdowns and added 4 targets for 45 yards receiving. On defense Blake had 4 tackles.
