Featured Stories January 17, 2024 , by Emma DunnPRESS RELEASE – On Tuesday, January 9, 2024, the Crime Suppression Unit was out working in an area we have received multiple crime tips about.
Crime Suppression Sgt. Trenton Benson observed a black Ford Mustang with no hood and a busted windshield driving on Rockmart Road.
When the vehicle passed Sgt. Benson, he observed no tag on the Mustang, so he turned around and initiated a traffic stop.
When Sgt. Benson approached the vehicle, he observed a crossbow in the passenger seat and loose ammunition on the driver’s side floorboard of the vehicle.
Sgt. Benson had the driver, later identified as Michael Shane Hulvey, exit the vehicle and patted him down for weapons for safety.
During the pat down, Hulvey attempted to put his hand in his pocket and pull away from Sgt. Benson and Sgt. Travis Kirkland, who was assisting at the traffic stop.
Sgt. Benson and Kirland were able to handcuff Hulvey after a short scuffle and then located a bag with 42.5 grams of suspected methamphetamine on Hulvey.
The Northwest Georgia Drug Task Force was contacted, and a search warrant was obtained by the Crime Suppression Unit for the residence of Hulvey.
During the search warrant service, a magnetic box was located with an additional 19.5 grams of suspected methamphetamine.
Michael Shane Hulvey, a 42 year old W/M out of Rockmart, GA is now charged with two traffic offenses, VGCSA Trafficking Methamphetamine and VGCSA Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine.
At the time of his arrest, Hulvey was out on bond for VGCSA Trafficking from 2022. Hulvey could potentially face additional charges as the Northwest Georgia Drug Task Force is still investigating this case.
